HISTORY

Disciples of Christ History

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) began on the American frontier in the early 1800's in what is now Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio. The founding fathers saw how the churches were divided because of creeds and tests of fellowship. They sought to bring unity to the body of Christ by doing away with creeds and statements of faith. The goal was to restore the church to the simplicity of the early church after Pentecost. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) currently has a membership of over one million members.

Calvary Christian Church History

Calvary Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Martinsville began with a small group of people meeting together in 1943. In the Spring of 1944 sixty people entered into a covenant dedicating themselves to this new venture. After meeting for a time in the court room of the city building, a lot was purchased on Mulberry Road. A church building was constructed on the site with the first service conducted in the Fall of 1948. An education wing was added in 1957. Members of the church are both caring and loving. Hugs and handshakes are the order of the day whenever meeting for worship or fellowship or any special program. We would be glad to have you come and visit with us at any time.
