                       Chapter History

Dorothea Henry Chapter, organized in Danville, VA, on March 4, 1894, with Mrs. James G. Penn as Organizing Regent, had fifteen Charter Members.  During its one hundred and ten years, the chapter has supported all DAR objectives.
Several members have published books about some aspect of local or American history.   The chapter sponsors the Dorothea Spotswood Henry C.A.R. society that is active in several of the chapter’s veteran projects and Commemorative Events.

From 1998 to 2004, the chapter has grown from 55 to 96 members. For every year since 1999, some of the chapter's Junior American Citizens contest entries have been state, divisional, and national winners!   Honorary Regent, Mrs. Diane B. Harper, Dorothea Henry's chairman of JAC, is a recipient of the National Thatcher Award for outstanding dedication and work on behalf of the JAC program Dorothea Henry, the Lady, and the chapter is proud of Julia Waid Edmonds, 2004 National Winner, “DAR Service for Veteran Volunteer in Extended Areas” and of Marie Yeatts Nales, 2004 National Winner, “DAR Literacy Challenge.”  Also, the chapter, for the third consecutive year, won the 2004 National  “Overall Excellence in Lineage Research” award.
