Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church
The year 1940, was a momentous year in the history of our world. The Second World War was raging in Europe and it seemed that all religions would lose their identity. The United States was not involved as yet but was preparing for war. In spite of bad news and hysteria, a group of dedicated Christians in Bassett, after much prayer and soul searching, decided that the community had grown so that it could support another Baptist Church. Mrs. Pocahontas Hundley Bassett, who was instrumental in building two previous churches, was still trying to enlarge the missionary spirit even though she was eighty years old. She never lost her faithful witness to her Lord and lived her devotion until she was called to her reward January 11, 1953, at the age of 91. Mrs. Bassett, with her usual enthusiasm, was so convincing that her husband, John David Bassett, said he would give the land for the church near their home. This was a good beginning. It was found that a great deal of interest was expressed and a business meeting was scheduled for August 26, 1940, at the Bassett Furniture Office. Dr. J. P. McCabe, pastor of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, attended and advised the group. A request was sent to Rev. Joseph R. Johnson, Superintendent of Missions, in Southwest Virginia, to come to Bassett and advise and assist in this budding adventure. Rev. Johnson came and conducted a revival and at the close the church was organized with 139 charter members. The church began their meetings in the old Bassett High School but transferred to Campbell Court Elementary School and remained there until the new church building was erected. Great challenges lie ahead but we look back with pride and joy for God’s manifold blessings in the creation of our church.
