Kimbanet Implements Wireless
Broadband WAN for Henry County Public Schools
Martinsville,
Virginia—December 10, 2002—Kimbanet, a locally owned and operated
Internet service provider, has successfully implemented a wireless
broadband WAN for the Henry County Public
School System. This new
technology allows all schools in Henry County the opportunity to
innovatively serve the area citizens more effectively. All Henry County
school administration, faculty and students share the same wireless
broadband network solution no matter the school’s geographic location.
The wireless broadband network runs on a 100 Mbps backbone
connected to a DS3 45 Mbps Internet connection. This provides more than
adequate bandwidth for the schools to operate efficiently well into the
future. The Henry County Public School’s Information Technology
department has upgraded the computer labs within the schools to utilize
the new broadband network to its fullest potential.
Specific goals to be achieved by executing this wireless WAN are:
• More bandwidth for online
Standards of Learning tests
• Ability to run server based applications within the LANs
• Provide a more stable network environment without volatility
The high-speed wireless WAN solution utilizes cutting edge
wireless technology. The use of Western Multiplex Tsunami
100 Mbps RF radios running on a 5.8 GHz radio frequency
made the high-speed connection possible. The Tsunami equipment provides
instant high capacity connectivity with no recurring fees. The system is scalable, affordable, and
easy to train personnel in terms of how to use the equipment.
This will ultimately prepare the Henry County School System
and its students for future developments in technology that can be
implemented with less cost and greater ease.
The Henry County Public School System was presented the
Leadership in Education Award from the Southern Piedmont Technology
Council in Danville, Virginia on November 19, 2002. Janet Copenhaver,
Director of Information Technology, accepted the award on behalf of the
Henry County students and School System.
